Lessons on Locations From Our New Atlanta Office

Lately, Marketo’s had Georgia on our minds — specifically, we’ve been thinking about Atlanta, where we’ve just opened a new office. With 40 employees, a great location, proximity to our customers, and an expert team of Marketo veterans, this marks an exciting moment for our company.

But a lot happened between the first time we thought of Georgia and today’s grand opening in Atlanta. If you’re ready to open a new office (or if you’re just starting to consider the possibility), here are four lessons we learned along the way:

1. Location, Location, Location

Look for a location that is welcoming to your industry — ideally, without being over-saturated. Atlanta is home to the nation’s busiest airport, making it an ideal meeting place for our customers and partners traveling from overseas. It’s also got a thriving tech scene — they city has added more than 8,000 tech jobs in the last three years, and is now home to several innovative start-ups. We can’t wait to meet and learn from our neighbors.

2. Meet Your Customers (and Prospects) Halfway 

Some of the biggest household brands in the world are based in Atlanta — like Coca-Cola, UPS and Home Depot. Beyond this, some of our best partners (folks like the Pedowitz Group) call Atlanta home. What better way to develop relationships than meeting our prospects and customers in their own backyards?

3. Transplant Company Veterans

Don’t open a new office cold — it’s crucial to bring in a rockstar team of seasoned employees, ensuring consistent company culture and institutional knowledge. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t rapidly grow once you’re established. We brought over a dozen employees from our headquarters in San Mateo, and plan to grow our Atlanta office to 200 employees in the next 24 months.

4. Have a Party

Opening a new location is a lot of work — why not reward yourself (and announce your presence) with a celebration? In true Marketo fashion, we’re celebrating with a grand opening today at our offices, complete with good food, cocktails, music and prizes. If you live in Atlanta, come join us!
